Casals lui-m\u00eame avait la plus grande estime pour lui, comme instrumentiste et comme musicien. Le monde musical pleura sa disparition pr\u00e9matur\u00e9e le 25 mai 1942, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de trente-neuf ans.<br \/>\nEmanuel Feuermann avait commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 enseigner le violoncelle au Curtis Institute en 1941, et il devait y enseigner \u00e9galement la musique de chambre \u00e0 la rentr\u00e9e 1942. C\u2019est l\u00e0 qu\u2019Istomin put faire sa connaissance et l\u2019entendre. Feuermann donna\u00a0un r\u00e9cital au Curtis le 27 mars 1942, jouant, entre autres, la <em>Sonate Arpeggione<\/em> de Schubert et la <em>Suite italienne<\/em> de Stravinsky. Il en \u00e9tait ressorti plein d\u2019enthousiasme, consid\u00e9rant que Feuermann \u00e9tait l\u2019\u00e9gal de Heifetz\u00a0! A cette \u00e9poque, Istomin croyait au progr\u00e8s dans l\u2019interpr\u00e9tation musicale, et il craignait d\u2019\u00eatre d\u00e9\u00e7u en arrivant \u00e0 Prades au printemps 1950. Casals vieillissant serait-il capable de rivaliser avec le souvenir du jeu de Feuermann\u00a0?
