Il\u00a0succ\u00e9da \u00e0 Paul Paray \u00e0 la t\u00eate de l\u2019Orchestre Symphonique de Detroit en 1963 et y\u00a0resta pendant dix ann\u00e9es. Artiste hyper-sensible, capable d\u2019entra\u00eener ses musiciens sur les sommets, c\u2019\u00e9tait aussi une personnalit\u00e9 irascible, d\u2019une exigence qui pouvait devenir maladive. Istomin assista, impuissant, au g\u00e2chis de sa carri\u00e8re, lorsque des probl\u00e8mes d\u2019alcool achev\u00e8rent de d\u00e9courager les responsables de l\u2019Orchestre Symphonique de Detroit de renouveler son contrat. Sixten Ehrling surmonta cette p\u00e9riode difficile et poursuivit son activit\u00e9 comme chef invit\u00e9 aux Etats-Unis et dans son pays natal. Istomin, qui a donn\u00e9 pr\u00e8s de trente concerts sous sa direction, le consid\u00e9rait comme un magnifique musicien et lui resta toujours fid\u00e8le. Lorsque la Juilliard School, o\u00f9 il avait pourtant form\u00e9 une g\u00e9n\u00e9ration de chefs prometteurs, de talent, d\u00e9cida de ne pas le garder, Istomin insista aupr\u00e8s de Marta, son \u00e9pouse, pour qu\u2019il soit engag\u00e9 \u00e0 la Manhattan School of Music comme chef permanent de l\u2019orchestre des \u00e9tudiants.
