Il le pla\u00e7ait au m\u00eame niveau qu\u2019Ormandy ou Szell. Il joua souvent avec lui, notamment \u00e0 Pittsburgh dont Steinberg fut le directeur musical de 1952 \u00e0 1976. Leur derni\u00e8re collaboration eut lieu \u00e0 Seattle en mars 1978, quelques semaines avant sa disparition.<br \/>\nN\u00e9 en 1899, William Steinberg n\u2019a pas fait l\u2019immense carri\u00e8re qui lui semblait promise, m\u00eame s\u2019il a son \u00e9toile au <em>Hollywood Walk of Fame<\/em>. Favori pour succ\u00e9der \u00e0 Charles Munch \u00e0 Boston en 1962, il se vit pr\u00e9f\u00e9rer Erich Leinsdorf \u00e0 cause de la pression de RCA qui pensait que celui-ci ferait vendre plus de disques\u2026 Nomm\u00e9 <em>Senior Guest Conductor<\/em> de l\u2019Orchestre Philharmonique de New York en 1964, il est jug\u00e9 trop vieux pour remplacer Bernstein. Apr\u00e8s le demi-\u00e9chec de Leinsdorf, Boston l\u2019appelle enfin en 1969, mais sa sant\u00e9 d\u00e9clinante l\u2019oblige \u00e0 annuler de nombreux concerts puis \u00e0 d\u00e9missionner en 1972.<br \/>\nSteinberg \u00e9tait un grand ami de Mrs Leventritt, la grande m\u00e9c\u00e8ne am\u00e9ricaine. Il avait d\u2019ailleurs fait partie du jury du Concours <a href=\"https:\/\/eugeneistomin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Steinberg-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-1369 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/eugeneistomin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Steinberg-2-245x300.jpg\" alt=\"Steinberg 2\" width=\"245\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.eugeneistomin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Steinberg-2-245x300.jpg 245w, http:\/\/www.eugeneistomin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Steinberg-2-835x1024.jpg 835w, http:\/\/www.eugeneistomin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Steinberg-2.jpg 2331w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 245px) 100vw, 245px\" \/><\/a>Leventritt qui avait lanc\u00e9 la carri\u00e8re d\u2019Istomin en 1943.\u00a0 Quelques ann\u00e9es plus tard, cette grande dame avait d\u00fb lui rappeler sa promesse d\u2019engager le jeune pianiste. Steinberg invita donc Istomin\u00a0 \u00e0 venir jouer le <em>Quatri\u00e8me Concerto<\/em> de Beethoven sous sa direction, \u00e0 Buffalo, en d\u00e9cembre 1950. Aussit\u00f4t Steinberg \u00e9crivit \u00e0 Mrs Leventritt : \u201cComment puis-je vous dire ma reconnaissance pour cette exp\u00e9rience extraordinaire\u00a0? Jouer avec Eugene a \u00e9t\u00e9 une joie profonde et je comprends bien les pr\u00e9visions flatteuses de Casals quant \u00e0 son avenir.\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0 Mais Steinberg ajoutait aussi que son exigence musicale et son refus des effets spectaculaires pourraient retarder son ascension : \u201cCela lui demandera dix ans de plus, avec de l\u2019\u00e9nergie et de la pers\u00e9v\u00e9rance, pour atteindre le sommet\u2026 Ses amis doivent l\u2019aider car il n\u2019est pas le genre de musicien qui pla\u00eet aux managers.\u00a0\u00bb<br \/>\nC&rsquo;\u00e9tait une analyse extraordinairement lucide de son talent, mais aussi de la difficult\u00e9 qu\u2019il aurait pour se faire reconna\u00eetre.
