Il y resta jusqu\u2019en 1963, d\u00e9missionnant un an avant la fin de son contrat tant l\u2019opposition d\u2019une partie de la critique, des musiciens de l\u2019orchestre et du public, devenait vive. Il \u00e9tait appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 pour ses interpr\u00e9tations du r\u00e9pertoire moderne, en particulier espagnol (son enregistrement des <em>Nuits d\u2019Espagne <\/em>de Falla avec Rubinstein fut longtemps une r\u00e9f\u00e9rence), mais il \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s discut\u00e9 dans le r\u00e9pertoire classique et romantique, notamment dans Mozart. Leon Fleisher raconte dans son livre de souvenirs, <em>My Nine Lives<\/em>, la premi\u00e8re r\u00e9p\u00e9tition d\u2019un concert enti\u00e8rement d\u00e9di\u00e9 \u00e0 Mozart o\u00f9 ils devaient jouer, lui le Concerto n\u00b0 25 K. 503, Istomin le <em>Concerto n\u00b0 9 K. 271<\/em>, et, ensemble, le <em>Concerto pour deux pianos K. 365<\/em>. Jorda d\u00e9clara que le <em>Neuvi\u00e8me Concerto<\/em> \u00e9tait son pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9, et commen\u00e7a \u00e0 le chanter avec un phras\u00e9 et un tempo quelque peu \u00e9tranges. Devinant le d\u00e9sarroi d\u2019Istomin, Fleisher crut qu\u2019il allait protester. Mais non, pour une fois Istomin se contenta de froncer les sourcils et de se mordre les l\u00e8vres.
